Biography
Menachem Shemi (Schmidt). b. 1897, Russia. Immigrated 1913. Studies: Odessa Academy of Art; Bezalel, Jerusalem. Teaching: 1920-22 Tiberias. Prizes: 1950, 1951 Dizengoff Prize. 1920 Was a founder of Association of Painters and Sculptors in Israel; an organiser of “Migdal David” Exhibition and a founder of Artists’ Colony, Safed. One of the designers of sets for Habimah and Ohel Theatres. From 1920-45 was in Paris. Served in the British Army. Outside sculpture: Memorial to fallen of Harel Brigade at Kiriat Anavim. Exhibitions: Paris 1928, 1937 and 1945; also in Egypt, Naples and Rome during Second World War. Exhibitions: 1950 Participated in Venice Biennale; 1952 retrospective exhibitions, Tel Aviv Museum and Haifa Museum for Modern Art; Biennale Sao Paulo; 1966 Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
