Katz Shmuel
(1926-
A native of Vienna, Katz took refuge in Hungary with his family after the 1938 annexation of Austria by Hitler. After the war he studied architecture in Budapest. By 1948 he was among the founding members of Kibbutz Gaaton. He then spent some time in Paris learning lithography, engraving, fresco and mosaics, which form the basis of his richly colored watercolors and reliefs. He has exhibited in Israeli museums as well as in a number of European countries. He won first prize at the 1961 Paris Biennale for young artists for drawings and water colors, was awarded a prize at the Montreal Expo, and earned the Nordau Prize in 1974. Katz is also celebrated for his illustrations for books.
